Activity description

Plan

We will hike two of the Presidentials and visit the Madison Hut. There will be views, as these mountains are a pile of rocks at the top

I am almost done completing the 48 (43 as of this writing) and done many solo. I"ve done and hosted a few with Ridg-It and would love to have your company.

distance: 9.2mi

elevation: 4977 ft

Expectations

I expect you to have previous hiking experience in the Whites. If you don’t, please reconsider. This is not a hike to begin with.

We will be hiking at a moderate pace, around 1.5 miles per hour. These mountains are notorious for taking longer than you expect. So, if you're looking to go as fast as possible or have difficulty staying together as a group, I do not recommend this hike for you.

Weather can change in a matter of a few minutes on these peaks. It will be around 32 degrees F and windy. Please be prepared for clouds, rain, even snow.

The plan is to take Valley Way to the Madison Hut. Summit Mt Madison and return to the hut. Summit Adams return to the hut. Finally, return to the cars by Valley Way.

Additional expectations

1) I am not a guide and this is not a service - I expect you to be fully prepared with the gear listed below and the mindset that you could get yourself out of trouble if needed.

2) We stick together - this is a group event, so if you feel that you are not flexible in working as a team, this will not be a good hike for you.

3) Relax - I's fall and we can enjoy the foliage from our endless views at the top.

4) We will follow COVID guidelines and wear masks during carpool and on the trail when social distancing cannot be maintained. Do not show up if you do not agree to the COVID guidelines.

5) Parking is limited, so non-carpoolers will be limited.

6) Showing up without registering on Ridj-it with a profile and then actually signing up for the trip is a safety hazard and will get you banned. Do not message me to join in any alternative manner.

Please answer the following questions before/when you join.

1. When was your last hike? How many miles was it? How much elevation gain?

2. What does your weekly exercise routine look like?

3. Do you have all of the gear marked as required below?

Required Gear

1) Hiking boots or trail runners (not regular tennis shoes)

2) 2 - 3 liters of water

3) Sandwich and food

4) Electrolytes

5) Electronic or physical maps of the hike (as included above) - don't show up without access to a map. I don't mind if you can't read it 100%, but showing up without one expecting me to guide you is a massive no no and I'll ask you to leave since you could otherwise pay me $200 for guiding you

6) Hat, gloves, warm layers sufficient for 32degree weather with windchill.

7) Rain gear

8) Headlamp. Phones for a flashlight are not enough.

If you are unsure as to whether this is the right hike for you, please post your question on the Ridj-it wall on the Ridj-it website! Others may have the same question, so you will be doing others a favor by being curious.

After the hike, we will be going out for dinner if time permits. Need to recover some of that energy, and celebrate summiting two more 4000 footers.

Prices

I thought I posted comment on here, but it must’ve been on MeetUp. So, I’ll copy same comment here: I just started NH48. Since Aug, I’ve hiked Osceola, E Osceola, and Tecumseh. Originally I was going to solo the Kinsmen’s this weekend, but would love to join your group for this hike. I can alwa  ... expand

Hello, I’m thinking of signing up for this hike but want to make sure that my experience/activity level is suitable. I run about 4-5 times a week (4-6 miles per run) and supplement running with yoga and Pilates stretching. My last hike was Welch-Dickey (4 miles) and I have the required gear.

Hey Farah - ultimately this is up to Mara since it's her trip, but Adams/Madison are some of the biggest mountains in the Whites. Generally having more experience helps, for example, Linda has listed the hikes she's done since August. Not sure when you did Flume and Welch-Dickey, but having very rec  ... expand

Thank you everyone for your enthusiasm! Antonio is right, this is a difficult hike. So to clarify, appropriate skills would be: - recent steep 4k' - 4000'+ elevation gain (negotiable, depends on the hikes you've done) - winter/freezing temp exposure

Hi all! Just signed up for this hike, very excited to be going! To answer the questions: 1. My last hike was Mt. Monadnock, about 5 miles round trip. Also this summer I've done Mts Moosilauke, Tecumseh, Wachusett, Hedgehog, Potash and Pierce. 2. My weekly cardio consists of 20 mile bike rides rou  ... expand

Hmm looks like I misread the pick-up time. I don't have a car so I can't make it to Alewife by 5am. Is anyone coming from the Brighton area who'd be willing to pick me up from there or somewhere nearby?

Hi Mara! Thank you for the clarification. I know my hiking resume is short w/ only 3 4ks. I’m confident that I can do this hike and would still love to join. If you’re not comfortable with it, no worries. I can work on these mountains myself, build up my experience, and hopefully join you next  ... expand

Hi Daniel. To address your question about headlamps, it is a standard item for hiking in the Whites. Should this hike take longer than expected we need to be prepared. Consider it a staple in your backpack. As for the requested experience, I have a healthy respect for these mountains and do not take  ... expand

Hi Linda, Thanks for asking. The Osceolas do have some steep sections for a 4k'. So that takes care of the first request. My other concern is exposure. The forecast is for below freezing with 10m hour winds. We will be above treeline and exposed for most of the day. Please take that into account.

I was planning on layering up, similar to what I would do for winter running & snowboarding. I have a ton of winter athletic clothing. The only thing I don’t have at the moment are microspikes. Do you think those are needed this time of year?

Hi Linda, I'm a winter runner myself and layers are key. If you are used to prolonged exposure to cold and have the right gear, it should be ok. I don't expect snow since it's been dry for the last few days. So I'm not bringing my microspikes. Hope that helps. See you on Sat.
